Where should I stay in Phuket?

Patong for nightlife and convenience, Karon or Kata for a quieter beach with plenty of food, and Phuket Town if you would rather have Sino-Portuguese shophouses, cafes and no beach at all. Bang Tao and Mai Khao are the resort ends.

Is Phuket Town worth visiting?

Yes, and it is the part of the island most people miss. The old quarter around Thalang Road has restored Sino-Portuguese shophouses, independent cafes and the Sunday walking street market, and it is nothing like the beach strips.

How far apart are the towns?

The island is about fifty kilometres top to bottom. Patong to Phuket Town is roughly forty minutes, Patong to Karon about fifteen. Traffic on the coast road is slow in high season, so plan more time than the distance suggests.

Which is best for families?

Karon and Kata: wide beaches, calm water for much of the year, and food that does not revolve around bars. Patong works too if you stay at the quieter northern end away from Bangla Road.

Do I need a car or scooter?

It helps. Songthaews run between beaches and Phuket Town but stop early, and taxis are expensive by Thai standards. Many visitors hire a car for a day or two rather than the whole stay.
