Big Buddha, Phuket Overview

The Big Buddha, or Ming Mongkol, stands 45 metres tall on Nakkerd Hill above Chalong Bay, making it one of the tallest statues in Thailand. It's less than 10 km from Kata and reached by a 6 km uphill road. The hilltop gives sweeping views over the south of the island. Entry is free, though a donation is customary, and visitors should dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered, since it's an active religious site.

Completely funded by public donations, the statue was under construction for a long time. Now that it has been completed, an up-close visit to this idol completely crafted out of white marble is worth one time. As you reach the top, a remarkable awe-inspiring sight of the island's southern coast and the Andaman Sea awaits you. If the visit is well-timed, you will also be treated to fabulous sunset. Another beautiful Buddha statue, a bit smaller and made entirely of brass, is also an impressive sight. The place is a temple greatly revered by locals and of high significance to Thai Buddhists, so be respectful of the templeÍs customs.
