Identity Proof: The renter must also carry a photograph as well as a passport/valid ID proof for insurance purposes. The company might also withhold your passport for security purposes.

International Driving Permit (IDP): It is required to have an International driving permit without which the car renting and driving in Langkawi is illegal.

Proof of Age: As per Malaysian rules, the renter must be between the age group of 23 – 65 years to rent a car in Langkawi. A proof for the same is necessary.

Is it Safe to Drive in Langkawi?

  • Driving around the island of Langkawi is quite easy for tourists, as there are lesser roads in town with people generally driving slowly. As the residents also provide directions with landmarks and not by street names, it becomes much easier to navigate the streets with clear driving signs.
  • The town follows the Malaysian driving principles of left-hand drive and has a larger road network.
  • Traffic on Langkawi Island is comparatively lesser than the other busier parts such as Pantai Cenang and Kuah.
  • Be cautious while driving as there have been many animal encounters on the island, especially with monkeys and cows.

Insurance Policy and Inclusions

  • All the car rentals in Langkawi provide excess clauses, theft protection, and personal accident insurance policies. The forms that you fill are not more than a 10-minute procedure.
  • If there is any damage done to the vehicle, there are policies like Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) which will reduce the excess financial responsibility of the renter. Also, note that the CDR coverage will only be implemented if a police complaint is made within 24 hours of the damage.
  • Take care of your belongings as these are not protected under the CDR policy.
  • Most of the car rental companies provide cars with functional airbags, efficient GPS tracking systems, tool kits, proper air-conditioning, roadside assistance and some may even give free Wi-Fi along with a tour guide and city map for a better experience.

Recovery Policy

If there is any internal damage done to the car by the renter, most of the time it is the renter’s responsibility. However, in some cases of minute damages, during the amount estimation, the money will be deducted from the security deposit amount. If the damage surpasses the insurance claim, then it completely comes under the renter’s responsibility.

Tips for Renting a Self-Drive Car in Langkawi

  • Driving Rules: The minimum age to rent a car in Langkawi is 23 years and it follows the Malaysian driving principles of left-hand driving.
  • Payment Mode: As many car rentals might not accept cash or prepaid cards as payment, be ready with a credit card that which the agency accepts
  • Late Charges: As the car rental services in Langkawi are based on per day charges, a one-day car rental must be returned on time within a 24-hour format. A grace period of an extra 59 minutes is given to the renter after the finished time. If the car is still not returned, then the renter has to pay the additional hourly rate as mentioned in the policy.
  • Off-Road Driving: Many of the car rental services do not operate on non-paved roads. Driving on beaches and crossing rivers or water bodies is considered as an offense.
  • Parking Fees/Fines: All the parking offenses or fines that are imposed on the car must be paid by the renter and do not apply to the rental agency.
  • Cancellation Policy: In case you want to cancel your booking, an advanced cancellation notice is required, or else cancellation fee might be imposed. If you cancel within less than 48 hours, then a 1-day rental fee might be applicable. However, in times of peak season, the agencies might also require a 2 weeks prior cancellation notice.
So, all said and done, renting a car in Langkawi shouldn’t be that tough anymore! Have a happy and safe ride!
