Langkawi Cable Car, Langkawi Overview

Located at The Oriental Village in the upper northwest of Langkawi Island, Langkawi Cable Car takes the riders to the top of Mount Mat Cincang (second highest peak of Langkawi). Also referred to as Langkawi SkyCab, it is popular for the panoramic view of the surrounding Islands and the Andaman Sea.

Officially opened on 1 November 2002, Langkawi Cable Car is the world’s steepest SkyCab and has the longest free span for a mono-cable. The cable comprises of three stations, Base Station, Middle Station and the Top Station. The total length of the cable is 4400 metre from the base station to the top station which is covered in approximately 15 minutes and a round trip takes about 28 minutes.

The viewing points at the stations offer a fascinating view of the mountains, caves, cliffs, blue waters, beautiful skyline and the tiny islands scattered in the Andaman Sea. At the Base Station and the Top Station, there is a plethora of activities and facilities.

SkyCab Stations

Langkawi Cable Car has three different stations, namely Base Station, Middle Station and the Top Station.

The Base Station is located at the foothill of the Machincang Mountain in the Oriental Village and offers different facilities of shopping and eating. From here, the visitors are taken to Machincang range, Middle Station via the Langkawi Cable Car. The visitors can either alight at the station and walk up to the viewing platforms or continue travelling to the Top Station. The journey from the Base Station to the Middle Station covers 1700 metres and provides access to the eastern ridges. The Middle Station is at an elevation of 650 metres from the sea level where you can get a 360-degree view of the main island and the surrounding islands.

On the journey to the Top Station, visitors can spot the flora and fauna that surrounds the area at a close range. The Top Station is at an elevation of 708 metres from the sea and has at its disposal two circular viewing platforms at the top of Machincang Mountain which are both a short walk up the stairs. This sight beholds an awe-inspiring view of Southern Thailand, Langkawi, isolated pinnacles and cliff walls. There is a 2.5 kilometre walking trail referred to as the Sky Trail through the forest which goes down to the Middle Station and Seven Wells Waterfalls.

Types of Gondolas

Cable Cars, referred to as Gondola, have a small window at the top of the cabin for ventilation through which one is able to feel the drop in the temperature as the cable car goes up. There are majorly four kinds of Gondolas and all prices are inclusive of entrance to SkyDome, SkyRex and 3D Art Langkawi.

Normal Gondola 
Each Gondola can accommodate 6 persons and can carry a total weight of 480 kilograms. There are in total 35 units of the normal gondola and it takes roughly 15 minutes to reach the Top Station by it.

Non Malaysian Citizen: Adult: RM 55, Child: RM 40
The cost ranges from RM 90/person – RM 105/person for th Express Lane privilege which reduces the waiting time to not more than 10 minutes.
Bottom Glass Gondola 
The Cable Car has a transparent glassed bottom and provides with a dazzling view of the mountains and forests underneath the feet.
Price: RM 105 per person and takes 15 minutes to reach the Top Station.
The price is inclusive of Express Lane privilege.
Private Gondola 
To experience this wonderful ride in privacy, opt for a Private Gondola which can accommodate up to 6 people. It uses the Glass Bottom Gondola
Price: RM 550 per Gondola 
This is inclusive of Express Lane privilege.
VIP Gondola 
To experience the wonderful ride in privacy, opt for VIP Gondola which can accommodate up to 3 people. It uses the VIP Gondola
Price: RM 550 per Gondola
This is inclusive of Express Lane privilege and a complimentary meal.

Tips

  • Food and beverages are not allowed inside the Cable Car. Storage space is provided to keep the personal belongings
  • Prefer to take a per hour rental taxi on busy days as it might be difficult to find a taxi on your way back
  • The Cable Car services are subject to weather conditions. Call before you plan to visit on bad weather days
  • The Cable Car services are suspended for two days in a month during scheduled maintenance. It is always a good idea to check before going

How to Reach Langkawi Cable Car

Langkawi Cable Car is about 12 kilometres away from the Langkawi International Airport which will take approximately 20 minutes by car.
From Kuah Town, it is about 29 kilometres away and will take approximately 34 minutes by car.
From Cenang Beach, it is about 18 kilometres and will take approximately 24 minutes by car.
