Best Time To Visit Georgetown Penang

February stays dry, and it is the month Thaipusam falls in, filling the hill temples and the city with pilgrims. In 2026 it lands on 1 February.

March starts picking up showers towards the end. Both months are hot, so the heritage-street walking is best finished before eleven.

April and May bring the first of Penang's two rain peaks, arriving as heavy late-afternoon thunderstorms rather than all-day rain.

Mornings stay reliable, so the heritage core, the clan jetties and the street art all still work if you front-load the day.

June and July sit between the two rain peaks and are more workable than the annual pattern suggests.

July is worth the weather. The George Town Festival runs through the month, filling the heritage streets with performance and making the city itself the attraction.

August and September see the rain climbing steeply towards the October peak. September is where whole days start going rather than afternoons.

Penang Hill is the first casualty. The view is the reason to ride up, and the summit sits in cloud far more often from September onwards.

October is the wettest month of the year and November is close behind. Heavy afternoons can leave water standing on the low-lying streets.

Switching within Malaysia will not help, because these two months are wet from Kota Kinabalu to the Cameron Highlands and Ipoh. For fixed dates, Hua Hin in Thailand is dry through November.

George Town is one of the few destinations where rain barely changes the trip. The hawker centres, shophouses, clan houses and museums are all covered, and the food is the main event.

Save the weather-dependent plans for the dry months. Penang Hill, Batu Ferringhi and the national park at Teluk Bahang are the parts that need a clear sky.
