The beach shacks policy of the Goa government has been kept on hold by The National Green Tribunal. The shacks won't be around to meet and greet with the tourists next month.

The decision has been stalled as the Tribunal wants to submit the mandatory Coastal Zone Management plan, which is the demarcation of the coastal areas into commercial, environment and no development zones, before proceeding with the shacks.

The government was due to submit the plan by August 31st but it has asked for an extension of six months to get done with the necessary formalities before the implementation of the plan.

The president of the All Goa Shack Owners Association Cruz Cardozo shared his views on this. He said, "We have not read the copy of the order yet, but the delay will affect our livelihood."

The shacks are very much the heart of Goa's beaches. They are dismantled before the monsoons every year. There is an annual ritual before the holiday season wherein the Tourism Ministry conducts a lottery for the allotment of beach shacks.

Goa Port Minister Michael Lobo said "The government will petition the NGT that the shacks are not permanent structures and are temporary only for the season. The Coastal Zone Management policy will be finalised by November and submitted before the Tribunal,"

Chief minister Pramod Sawant's led cabinet agreed to the policy of beach shacks to set up around 350 plus shacks along the 105 kilometer long coastline, which houses Goa's most popular beaches. It has also assured to undertake the necessary steps to speeden the setup and allotment of the shacks.
