Capitol Theatre, also known as Kyo-Ei-Gekijo, is situated in the heart of Singapore’s civic district. It is a historic cinema and theatre which was designed by Richard Meier and Partners and is known to become South-east Asia’s largest single-screen cinema. Capitol Theatre has gone through a series of renovation over the course of time and can accommodate around 977 people with a rotational floor system. Background

A Persian businessman M.A. Namazie built capitol Theatre in 1929. During that time, over 1600 people could accommodate in the theatre. The older architecture of theatre displayed sculptures of winged horses and a mosaic of 12 zodiac signs on the dome-shaped ceiling of the theatre.

Capitol Theatre started with the screening of English language films. In the 60s, it was a popular site for couple romance who have fond memories of Magnolia Snack Bar. Soon in the 1970s, a proposal for the renovation of the theatre was submitted, but the efforts were useless. Despite consistent efforts, the restoration of the theatre did not take place and later in 1998; it screened its last movie. Thereafter in 2007, it was declared a conservation area.
