Fairs and Festivals in August in 2024 in India

Monsoons are around the corner and if you feel like stepping out, we’ve got a lot of festivals for you to try.

Experience some thrill at the boat races in Kerala or get dirty, very dirty at ‘The Mud Rush’ held at Silvassa. One can also experience some traditional festivals across the country. So get out and get going!

1. The Mud Rush

Want a better way to spend your Monsoons? Check this out – The Mud Rush, an all-terrain marathon style fun run.

The Mud Rush stretches across a more than five kilometer circuit with twenty one obstacles encompassing 30-foot stacks of hay, water bodies, barrier walls, 100 feet stretches of tires, 45 degree sloped hills, fire, ice, and, of course, a whole lot of Mud. There is an after party as well. So bring along your muddy buddies and get some dirt!

2. Nehru Boat Race

When: August 10, 2024

Where: Punnamada Backwaters, Alappuzha, Kerala

When August comes, the placid water of the Punnamada Lake becomes a track on fire. Magnificent snake boats compete for the prized trophy to commemorate the visit of Jawaharlal Nehru, to Alappuzha.

The Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race is one of the most exciting races of the year. The rhythmic and the synchronized way of rowing the majestic snake boats make it a rare spectacle. There are tickets for the stands, for those who wish to witness some speed chasing and cheer along for their favourite team.

3. Independence Day

When: August 15

Independence Day is a historic day of the celebration of India’s independence from the British rule. The Red Fort in Delhi is where the real action takes place where a flag hoisting ceremony is held along with cultural programmes. Kite flying is a tradition associated with Independence Day. The skies come to life on this day with colorful and tri-colour kites flying on rooftops.

4. Velankanni Church Feast

When: August 29- September 8, 2024

Where: Velankanni, Tamil Nadu

Every year from 29th August to 8th September, the Annual Feast Of Our Lady Of Health is celebrated in Velankanni, which is attended by an estimated 3 million people. Velankanni lies in the Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu and is home to one of the country’s biggest Catholic pilgrimage centres- Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, which attracts 20 million pilgrims from all over India and abroad.

September 8 is considered auspicious because it was the day the Portuguese sailors first landed in these parts and built the first actual Church.

During the Feast Holy Mass is celebrated in six languages, fourteen times a day. The 11-day annual festival concludes with the celebration of the Feast of the Nativity of Mary on 8 September.
