1. Sakurajima

Volcano

An active volcano sitting directly across the bay from the city, venting ash on most days, which residents simply live with. The ferry takes 15 minutes and costs 250 yen, running around the clock. On the island are lava walking trails, foot baths fed by the volcano and rim viewpoints. Approach within 2 km of the craters is prohibited, so every lookout sits about 3 km out. A Shimazu clan garden of 1658 laid out so that Sakurajima becomes the centrepiece of the view and the bay reads as its pond, which is borrowed scenery at the largest scale attempted anywhere in Japan. Alongside it stand the UNESCO-listed Shuseikan industrial works. Viewpoint

A hilltop lookout 107 metres above the centre, giving the definitive view of the city with Sakurajima smoking behind it, and the photograph every brochure uses. It is free and open at all hours, and it is best at sunrise when the light is behind you. The hill also holds the cave where Saigo Takamori spent his last days in 1877.

A seaside town where geothermal heat warms the black volcanic sand, and you are buried in it up to the neck for around ten minutes while the weight and the heat do their work. Saraku sand bath hall is 1,400 yen. Plan the trains carefully: the limited express takes 50 minutes but runs only three times a day, while the local takes 70 to 80 and runs often.

5. Day Trip to Chiran

Day Trip

A 700 metre street of samurai residences with seven Edo gardens behind their stone walls, the best preserved such district in Kyushu, and separately the Peace Museum for the kamikaze pilots who flew from the airfield here. The 530 yen ticket covers all seven gardens; the museum is a separate ticket 2 km away. The bus runs every one to two hours, so this is a full day rather than a half.

Satsuma led the overthrow of the shogunate in 1868, and this museum explains how and why, using animatronic dramas of Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi that are more effective than they sound. Do it early in a visit: almost everything else in Kagoshima, from Sengan-en to Shiroyama, is a footnote to this story.

The prefectural history museum, built on the site of Tsurumaru Castle with its moat and stone walls still standing outside, covering Kagoshima from prehistory to the present. 430 yen. One trap to note: it closes on Mondays and also on the 25th of each month, which catches a lot of people. The Saigo Takamori statue is a short walk away.

Commercial Street

The covered arcade district in the centre, the largest shopping and eating quarter in southern Kyushu, named after an observatory the Shimazu built here. This is where you eat: kurobuta pork cutlets, satsuma-age fish cakes and shirokuma, a mountain of shaved ice with condensed milk and fruit that was invented in this district.

A volcanic national park about an hour north, with crater lakes, hot springs and Kirishima-Jingu, a vermilion shrine standing in old cedar forest. The hiking here is the best in the region. Check the volcanic alert level before planning a walk: Shinmoedake governs access to the Karakunidake and Ebino-kogen trails and it changes without much warning.

Temple

A shrine to Shimazu Nariakira, the lord who industrialised Satsuma, standing under a large white torii at the foot of Shiroyama. It is free and central, and it is the natural starting point for the walk up to the observatory and across to Reimeikan, which is why it earns a place over the city's several other small shrines.

Zoo

A municipal zoo on a hillside south of the city holding the largest koala collection in Japan, alongside red pandas, Humboldt penguins and species native to Kagoshima. Sakurajima stands in the view from several of the enclosures. Note the zoo's own pricing of 750 to 1,000 yen rather than the 500 some guides quote.

Art Gallery

A compact city gallery next to Terukuni Shrine, built around artists from Kagoshima including Kuroda Seiki and Fujishima Takeji, with a smaller European holding that runs to Monet, Cezanne and Picasso. Cheap and central, and it fits neatly into the same afternoon as Reimeikan and the shrine without adding any walking.

Garden & Park

A hilltop park north of the city with more than 800 cherry trees and an elevated view across the bay to Sakurajima, which makes it the best hanami spot in Kagoshima. Be clear that it is strongly seasonal: early April is the window, and outside it this is a pleasant municipal park rather than a reason to make the trip.
