Day Trip to Kirishima, Kagoshima Overview
A volcanic national park about an hour north, with crater lakes, hot springs and Kirishima-Jingu, a vermilion shrine standing in old cedar forest. The hiking here is the best in the region. Check the volcanic alert level before planning a walk: Shinmoedake governs access to the Karakunidake and Ebino-kogen trails and it changes without much warning.
