Shiroyama Observatory, Kagoshima Overview
A hilltop lookout 107 metres above the centre, giving the definitive view of the city with Sakurajima smoking behind it, and the photograph every brochure uses. It is free and open at all hours, and it is best at sunrise when the light is behind you. The hill also holds the cave where Saigo Takamori spent his last days in 1877.
