1. Huis Ten Bosch

Amusement & Theme Park

A full-size Dutch town of canals, windmills and brick townhouses spread over 152 hectares on Omura Bay, and the largest single theme park by area in Japan. The scale is the point: you walk or take a canal boat between quarters rather than queue for rides. Island

Two hundred and eight uninhabited islets scattered along 25km of coast inside Saikai National Park. The Pearl Queen sails a 50-minute loop from Pearl Sea Resort for about 2,200 yen and threads between them at sea level. Worth knowing before you pay: the islands themselves cost nothing to see, and the hilltop lookouts above the bay give you the wider composition that a boat deck cannot.

Viewpoint

A free deck at 165m that most visitors reach only by car, which is why it stays quiet while the resort below fills up. From this height the 208 islands stack into layers instead of sitting flat, and on clear evenings the sun drops between them. No gate, no ticket, and open around the clock.

Historical Site

Three concrete towers of 136m, built in 1922 to transmit to the Imperial Navy fleet and set in a triangle wider than the towers are tall. Entry to the base and the small exhibit is free, but the site is volunteer-staffed and opens only 09:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 16:00, so an afternoon arrival can find the gate shut.

Viewpoint

The one viewpoint that shows Sasebo as a working naval city rather than a scenic bay. From 364m the harbour, the US fleet base and the Japanese destroyer piers are laid out below with the islands beyond. Free and reachable by road, and the hour after dark is when the port lights make the case for coming up.

Bridge

Two bridges over the Hario Strait, where the tide funnels through and throws up visible whirlpools twice a day. The glass-floored walkway that lets you stand over the water is on the newer bridge, not the 1955 arch, which is the detail most itineraries reverse. The old bridge has the park with around a thousand cherry trees, making early April the better time to stop.

7. Day Trip to Kuroshima Island

Day Trip

A 50-minute ferry to an island where most of the few hundred residents are Catholic, descended from families who kept their faith hidden for two centuries. The 1902 brick church is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the reason to make the crossing, but it takes an advance reservation through the Nagasaki church information centre. Arriving at the door without one does not get you inside.

Landmark

The westernmost point of mainland Japan, marked by a monument on a low headland above the East China Sea. There is little here besides the marker, a short path and the water, and that emptiness is the appeal: the sunsets face open sea with nothing in the way. Around an hour by car from central Sasebo, with no public transport worth planning around.
