Sakurajima, Kagoshima Overview
An active volcano sitting directly across the bay from the city, venting ash on most days, which residents simply live with. The ferry takes 15 minutes and costs 250 yen, running around the clock. On the island are lava walking trails, foot baths fed by the volcano and rim viewpoints. Approach within 2 km of the craters is prohibited, so every lookout sits about 3 km out. Search it as Sakurajima, Kagoshima: the bare name resolves to a station in Osaka.
