1. Kabira Bay

Viewpoint

Emerald water scattered with small forested islets and the black rafts of a pearl farm, seen from a clifftop platform above the beach. Know this before you pack a swimsuit: swimming and snorkelling from Kabira are not permitted, and access to the water is by glass-bottom boat only. A great many listicles promise otherwise. Viewpoint

The northern tip of the island: a white lighthouse on a grass headland with ocean on three sides and nothing built beyond it. Getting there is half of it, an hour up the east coast on an almost empty road, which makes this the destination for the island's best drive rather than a quick stop. Free, exposed, and best on a clear day when the reef colours show.

Viewpoint

A headland lookout over the narrowest part of the island, with the reef showing as bands of turquoise and the coast curving away on both sides. Hibiscus and lilies are planted along the path up. Unlike Hirakubo further north this one sits right on the main road with a car park at the bottom, so it is the big view you can have without committing to the full northern drive.

Beach

A shallow reef beach on the north coast where coral and reef fish start a few metres from the sand, which makes it the best shore snorkelling on Ishigaki and the answer to Kabira's swimming ban. Two warnings worth taking seriously: there are no lifeguards, and the current past the reef edge runs hard out to sea. Stay inside the reef and go at high tide.

Mountain

A 282 metre volcanic cone on the northern peninsula with a steep, rooty scramble of 30 to 40 minutes to the top. It is short enough to do before lunch and it delivers the single best view on the island, out over both coasts at once. Ishigaki's highest peak, Omoto, is taller but its summit is closed in by trees and its trail is unmaintained, so this is the one to climb.

Diving & Snorkeling

The reef off Shiraho holds the largest blue coral colony in the Northern Hemisphere, a species that survives only in shallow, sheltered water. You cannot see it from the sand: the colony sits out past the inner lagoon and is reached on a guided boat or kayak trip timed to the tide. Local operators run it as a conservation visit, and swimming out alone is discouraged.

A cleaning station off Kabira Ishizaki where reef mantas queue above the coral heads to have parasites picked off, which is why they hover instead of passing through. The season runs April to November and peaks July to September. The Yaeyama diving association enforces a fixed approach route and a no-chasing rule, so boats take turns and you wait your slot rather than swimming toward them.

Viewpoint

The western headland, where the cliffs drop to the East China Sea and there is nothing between you and the horizon. This is the sunset side of the island, and it is noticeably quieter than Kabira because most tour routes do not come out this far. Twenty minutes from town. Bring a torch for the walk back to the car.

Shopping Market

Two floors in the middle of town selling what the Yaeyamas actually produce: reef fish in colours that look wrong, pineapple and mango in season, island salt, chilli oil and awamori. Upstairs is craft and textiles. Ishigaki town is otherwise thin on sights, so this is the stop that justifies coming into the centre at all.

Buddhist Temple

Founded in 1614 and still the southernmost Zen temple in Japan, which is the fact worth knowing before you go. Inside the gate stand a pair of wooden Deva kings carved in 1737, designated cultural properties and among the oldest surviving objects in the Yaeyamas. Small, free and five minutes from the market, so it costs nothing to fold in.

Historical Site

Built in 1819 for a local Ryukyuan official and the only surviving house of the samurai class anywhere in the Ryukyu islands, with a coral-rock garden laid out behind it. It is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. Nothing else in the Yaeyamas shows how the ruling class actually lived, which is why it earns a place over the larger but more generic museums in town.

Garden & Park

A forested hill park just above the town with subtropical woodland, walking trails and an observation deck over the whole island. It doubles as the island's practical stargazing spot, which matters because the Ishigaki Astronomical Observatory's theatre is closed indefinitely and its main telescope is out of service. Free, and open at night.

Day Trip

Ten minutes by ferry to a flat coral island whose village is the best preserved in Okinawa: red-tiled roofs, coral walls, white sand lanes raked every morning and a shisa on every ridge. Kondoi has the swimming; Kaiji has the star-shaped sand grains people hunt for on hands and knees. Rent a bicycle at the port. This is the most visited of the Yaeyama day trips and it deserves to be.

Ninety percent jungle, UNESCO-listed since 2021, and completely unlike anywhere else in Japan: mangrove rivers you travel by boat, the Urauchi river walk to Pinaisara Falls, and the Iriomote cat that almost nobody sees. Day Trip

The southernmost inhabited island in Japan, with a monument marking the point and Nishihama, which is the best beach in the Yaeyamas by some distance. The skies here are famously dark. One caution before building a day around it: the fast ferry is small and cancels often in rough seas, so it is not a same-day certainty and you should keep the following day free.

A small sugarcane island where the Shuga-no-michi ridge road runs between the fields and Mount Ufudaki gives a 360 degree view over the whole Yaeyama group. Two hours on a bicycle covers all of it. Of the reachable islands this is the quietest, so take it if Taketomi sounds too busy and Iriomote too much of a commitment.
