So Which Should You Pick?
The split is fairly clean. Thailand suits a shorter first trip: flights run three to four and a half hours, four or five days is enough for a city and a beach, and vegetarian food and English are easy to find everywhere. Vietnam rewards a longer run of seven or eight days, because the country is long and the good parts are spread from Hanoi down to Phu Quoc. Budgets land in much the same range, so the real question is how much time you have. With a week or less, start with Thailand.
