Known For : Edakkal Caves Banasura Sagar Dam Chembra Peak
Wayanad covers more ground than most Kerala hill destinations and has more variety as a result. The Edakkal Caves with prehistoric carvings, Chembra Peak trek, Banasura Sagar Dam, Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary in the north and Kuruva Island bamboo rafting are spread across a large district that rewards 3-4 days rather than a rushed overnight. The cooler temperatures compared to the Kerala coast and the mix of tribal culture, wildlife and plantation landscape give it a distinct character.
Best Time: Throughout the year
Known For : Mattupetty Dam Kolukkumalai Tea Estate Top Station
The most visited hill station in Kerala and for consistent reasons — the Kolukkumalai tea estate sunrise, Top Station viewpoint with views into Tamil Nadu, the Eravikulam National Park where Nilgiri Tahr graze near the road and the Mattupetty Dam area are all within range of a well-placed base. The drive up from Kochi through the ghats is part of the experience. It gets busy on weekends and in peak season, so weekday visits or shoulder season travel makes a difference.
Best Time: September to May
Known For : Vagamon Falls Kurisumala Vagamon Lake
Vagamon is a plateau rather than a conventional hill town, which gives it a different feel from Munnar or Wayanad. The pine forests, open meadows, Kurisumala ashram viewpoint and the paragliding site attract a mix of visitors looking for quiet stays and those wanting weekend adventure. It sits at the Kottayam-Idukki border and the generally low tourist infrastructure compared to Munnar gives it a slower pace that suits longer stays.
Best Time: October - March
Known For : Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary Golden Valley Mini Zoo, Ponmudi
The 22 hairpin bends on the road up from Trivandrum are the introduction and the golden valley at the top is the reward. Ponmudi is Kerala's closest hill station to the state capital and the butterfly-rich forest trails, Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary below and the views across the Thiruvananthapuram district make it a strong choice for travelers based in the south of Kerala. The Meenmutty Falls nearby and the Golden Valley stream walk are the main activities
Best Time: November to May
Known For : Periyar National Park Kadathanadan Kalari Centre Periyar Tiger Trail
The Periyar Tiger Reserve is the reason Thekkady exists as a destination — boat safaris on the Periyar Lake in early morning are the most reliable way to see elephants in Kerala, and the forest treks offer a wilder experience. The spice plantations around Kumily town, Kadathanadan Kalari shows and the market streets make it a well-rounded destination beyond the wildlife component. It works well as a two-night stop on a Munnar-Alleppey circuit.
Best Time: Throughout the year
Known For : Grampi Thrissanku Hills Peeru Hills
Peermede sits between Kottayam and Thekkady at 915 metres, often driven through rather than stayed in. The Grampi and Thrissanku hills viewpoints, tea and cardamom estate walks and the Pattumala Church on the hillside above are reasons to stop. It has a quieter character than both Munnar and Thekkady and works well as an alternative base for exploring the Idukki region without staying in busier towns.
Best Time: April to June, September to November
Known For : Thread Garden, Malampuzha Malampuzha Ropeway Malampuzha Dam
Malampuzha is primarily a day-trip destination from Palakkad rather than an overnight hill station. The dam, garden, ropeway and rock garden are the draws for families from the plains. The Japanese Garden and the Fantasy Park adjacent to the main garden make it one of Kerala's more developed recreational hill destinations. Palakkad railway station is only 7 km away, making it the most rail-accessible Kerala hill destination on this list.
Best Time: August to April
Known For : Pookot Lake Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary BeeCraft Honey Museum
Vythiri is primarily known for its resort accommodation set in Wayanad's forests, with treehouse stays being the main draw. Pookode Lake is 10 km away, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary passes through the region and the Chembra Peak and Soochipara Falls are both within range. It functions as an accommodation base for Wayanad rather than a destination with its own separate identity, but the forest resort experience here is the best developed in Kerala.
Best Time: October to Apr
Known For : The Elembalai Hill Adyanpara Waterfalls Teak Museum
Nilambur's main claim is the world's oldest teak plantation, Conolly's Plot, established in 1842 and still standing. The adjacent Teak Museum and the Chaliyar River running through the forest give it a specific character that most Kerala hill stations lack. Adyanpara Waterfalls and the broader Nilambur forest region attract trekkers and birders, and it's one of the less crowded Kerala hill destinations accessible from the north of the state.
Best Time: October to March
Known For : Nelliyampathy Hills Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary Seetharkund Waterfalls
The 42 hairpin bends on the road up from Nenmara are the dramatic approach to a hill area that most visitors find worth the drive. Tea, coffee and cardamom plantations at elevations between 500 and 1,600 metres, the Seetharkund waterfall, the Kesavan Para viewpoint and the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary nearby give it genuine variety. One of Kerala's least crowded Western Ghats destinations and better for it.
Best Time: October to March
Known For : Devi Lake Pallivasal Falls Thoovanam Falls
Devikulam is 13 km from Munnar and functions as a quieter alternative base for exploring the same region. The Sita Devi Lake with its Ramayana legend, the Pallivasal and Thoovanam waterfalls and the tea estate landscape that's continuous with Munnar's make it a natural extension of a Munnar trip. The cooler nights at 1,800 metres make the accommodation here noticeably more comfortable than in Munnar town itself.
Best Time: November to May
Ranni in Pathanamthitta district sits on the Pampa River 66 km from Sabarimala, making it a significant transit point for pilgrims. The Perunthenaruvi Falls, the forested Pathanamthitta landscape and the general river and hill character give it appeal beyond the pilgrimage context. Less developed for tourism than most Kerala hill destinations, which keeps it quiet.
Best Time: November-March
Paithalmala in Kannur district at 1,372 metres is one of Kerala's best trekking destinations in the north of the state. The 6-km trek through dense forest to the summit opens to rolling grassland meadows with panoramic views that draw photographers, particularly in the post-monsoon season when the mist and light are at their best. Restricted to limited daily visitor numbers, so advance registration is required.
Marayoor near Munnar is in the rain shadow of the Western Ghats and gets significantly less rainfall than Munnar itself, which gives it a different character. The natural sandalwood forests, the ancient Muniyara dolmens that are among the oldest megalithic monuments in South India, sugarcane fields and the access to Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary make it one of the more historically and ecologically distinctive side trips from Munnar.
Kuttikkanam in the Idukki district was historically a summer retreat for the Travancore royal family and the colonial-era bungalows and pine forests around the town reflect that. The cooler climate, proximity to the Periyar region and the pine forest drives make it a quiet alternative to the busier Idukki hill towns. Less developed for tourism than Munnar or Vagamon, which is precisely its appeal for some visitors.
t 1,868 metres, Agasthyakoodam is one of Kerala's highest peaks and the summit trek is one of the most rewarding in the southern Western Ghats. Access is restricted to the January-April trekking season through the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary, with permits required. The biodiversity of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve and the rare medicinal plants found on the route are of specific interest to naturalists. Not a hill station in any conventional sense but a significant destination for serious trekkers.
The hill stations in Kerala are very sought after destinations due to their perfect climate throughout the year, great facilities for travellers and amazing coffee and tea plantations.
