Here is everything you need to know to rent a bike in Kerala:

Cost Of Renting A Bike In Kerala

The main expense and the primary concern while on vacation is the cost of travelling. People generally do not wish to spend money on travelling within the city especially on local cabs which tend to be overpriced. The most cost-effective way of travelling within the city is by renting a bike.

In Kerala, bikes are readily available for rent, and you can choose one according to your budget. Most bike rentals are based in favourite tourist spots like Cochin and Munnar. You can rent bikes on hourly, daily, weekly or even monthly basis. Starting from INR 360 per day and going up to INR 2000 per day. The tariff of bikes depends on the type of bike that you wish to rent. Most scooters are cheaper than motorbikes.

The price varies according to the day and also the month of the year. It is usually high during tourist season as the demand is too high. The rentals also take a security deposit against the bike which is generally INR 1000 but can be more on expensive bikes.

Documents Required For Bike Rental in Kerala

If you are travelling to Kerala and wish to rent a bike, you must have a valid Driver's Licence. You will need to submit a photocopy of your Driver's Licence at the rental place. Along with this, you will also need to provide an ID Proof in original which includes PAN card, Passport, Aadhar Card or Election card and a photo of you. Be sure to keep a copy of this ID proof with you for future reference. If you are travelling from some other country, be sure to get an International Driving Permit and your Driver's License from home country.
Some rental places only rent a bike if you are 21 years of age or older.

Insurance Policy For Renting A Bike in Kerala

The rentals places always insure their bikes, but it is advisable to confirm and inquire about the insurance policy. In case of an accident, the user is liable to pay a certain amount for repairs, and the insurance covers some cost. The insurance covers the price only if the user does not violate the terms and conditions of the rental place. Otherwise, the entire cost is to be borne by the user.

The users are required to pay a security deposit against the rented bike which is fully refundable as long the bike suffers no damage.

Most places do not provide any theft insurance. In case of theft of the bike, the entire cost is expected to be paid by the user. It is advisable to clarify this before renting the bike.

Inclusions For Bike Rental in Kerala

Some bike rentals provide you with a free helmet, while some offer it on a per day rental basis. Extra helmets are also available but at a cost. These are good quality, branded helmets and are expensive so be careful with them. If you lose or damage the helmet, you will be levied a charge.

Some rental places provide a free local map, toolkits and roadside assistance as and when you need it. If your vehicle breaks down on your journey, be sure to keep the maintenance receipts with you as you can refund them at the rental place.

The fuel charges are not included and must be borne by you. You are supposed to return the bike with the same amount of fuel as it was at the time of pick up.

  • Before taking the bike out of the rental place, be sure to check its fuel meter and make a note of it. You will have to return the bike with the same amount of fuel
  • You should check the bike for scratches, dents or any tears in the seat cover. These should be brought to the attention of the rental place to avoid any hassle later on.
  • Be sure to drive the bike within the speed limit and do not drink or drive. This will not only endanger your life but is also strictly prohibited under the guidelines of the bike rentals.
  • Do not return the bike in a dirty condition otherwise; you will have to pay for the cleaning.
  • It is better if you are an experienced driver and owns proper driving gear like gloves etc. as the bikes being rented out are heavy, large and quite sturdy.
  • Every rental place has a different cancellation policy. The amount of time before the pickup date, the cancellation takes place, and the following amount that is refunded as per it varies from place to place.
  • Renting of a bike is subject to availability. If the bike that you booked is not available when you arrive, you will have to settle for a suitable alternative, or you can also ask for a full refund.
