New Road, Kathmandu Overview
New Road, known locally as Naya Sadak, is Kathmandu's central commercial street. It was built in 1934 under Prime Minister Juddha Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, after the 1934 Nepal-India earthquake flattened large parts of the old city. First named Juddha Sadak in his honour, the street was renamed New Road after the fall of the Rana regime. It connects Kantipath to Kathmandu Durbar Square and today functions as a financial and retail hub, lined with banks, jewellery stores and electronics shops.
New Road sits at the heart of old Kathmandu, linking the Kantipath crossing to Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in 1934 after the earthquake that year destroyed much of the surrounding area, it was originally called Juddha Sadak after Prime Minister Juddha Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana; the name changed to New Road once the Rana regime ended. A statue of Juddha Shumsher still stands at the street's western roundabout. Nepal Airlines, Nepal Bank Limited and Gorkhapatra Sansthan are headquartered here, and nearby lanes such as Indra Chowk, Ason Tole and Freak Street add to the area's dense market atmosphere.
