Shopping in Thamel

Thamel is Kathmandu's main tourist shopping district, a maze of narrow lanes selling pashmina and cashmere shawls, woolen clothing, handicrafts, souvenirs, and trekking gear. It has served as the city's tourist commercial hub for over four decades, growing from Nepal's first bookstores and travel agencies into a dense cluster of shops, guesthouses, restaurants, and gear outfitters. Its tight alleys double as thoroughfares for rickshaws and motorbikes, making a slow morning walk through the shops part of the experience itself.

Beyond the gear shops that outfit trekkers heading toward Everest and other Himalayan routes, Thamel's stores stock woolen sweaters, shawls, and blankets, along with singing bowls, prayer flags, thangka paintings, and semi-precious jewelry. Bookshops, music stores, and pashmina outlets line the same lanes as budget guesthouses and rooftop cafes. Bargaining is expected almost everywhere except fixed-price cooperative shops. Evenings bring live music bars and street food stalls into the mix, making the district as much a social hub after dark as it is a shopping destination through the day.
