Dumpling or Momo, as it is more popularly known has become quite a staple among the street food bandwagon of India. This Tibetan import is relished by everyone especially students. A steaming plate of momos is all you need after a tiresome or rather banal lecture. Students reading this would surely resonate. So here is a list of some of the best places that can provide you momos which kick your taste buds and carve a special craving in your tummy.
1. McLeod Ganj, Himachal Pradesh:
McLeod Ganj is the largest Tibetan hub in India with about 1,00,000 Tibetan refugees calling it home. The place houses some of the best restaurants for momos in India. Hence it is called the “little Lhasa”, which is the place where it all began. The best momos are served at Mama’s kitchen where the owner Mrs Netta radiates warmth to her customers apart from serving the most delicious momos. If you are lucky then you may also find peanut butter and chocolate momos here. McLlo Restaurant is also famous for its killer vegetable and chicken momos.
2. Darjeeling, West Bengal:
The white crown of Bengal smells of delightful momos as much as it smells of fresh air and snow. Kunga Restaurant on Gandhi Road, near city centre is a bit heavier on the pocket but it sure serves one of the best momos along with other Tibetan dishes. Hot stimulating Cafe on Jawahar Road West, Richmond Hill is well known among the natives as well as tourists. The owner is a generous lady who offers momo cooking classes. You might want to take that, just in case you intend to stay a little longer.
3. Gangtok, Sikkim:
The people of Sikkim love momos as much as they love cleanliness. They cook lip smacking momos stuffed with vegetables and minced meat which they can eat anytime of the day. Roll House at Mahatma Gandhi Marg is one famous place for momos. While the popular vote says that rolls here are quite average, people swear by the incredible taste of momos!
4. Dehradun-Mussoorie, Uttarakhand:
The doon valley houses a great deal of momo lovers and hence some great places to enjoy them. Orchard which is on Rajpur Road is touted to have the best momos in Doon. Albeit not as cheap as the roadside joints, it has quite an ambience which promises to keep pulling you in future for frequent visits. But what really steals the show here is Kalsang Friend’s Corner. It’s a fancy, colourful and small place right where the Mall Road of Mussoorie turns steeper. A major crowd favorite since a long time, its momos and Wonton Soup (a unique soup with momos) are unbeatable.
5. Nainital, Uttarakhand:
You’ve all been to Nainital to take a boat ride in the renowned Naini Lake and escape from the summer of plains. As much as it’s a bliss to have sweet roasted corns on misty roads, eating hot steaming momos in Tibetan market is sheer happiness too. Sonam’s momos which is located at the end of this market is very famous.
6. Shillong, Meghalaya:
If you’re a momos fan then Shillong is definitely a must visit. There’s a plethora of eating joints and restaurants whose momos you can try out. But there few that stand out. Hotel Broadway will probably serve you one of the best pork momos you’ve ever had. Then there are Momo Ghar and Shillong Restaurant which are touted to be the best servers of momos in Shillong. Visitors have their own personal favorites among them.
7. Spiti, Himachal Pradesh:
For all meat lovers, the moon shaped, greased in butter Yak meat momos are a delicacy in Spiti. If you’re lucky you can find some of the best momos here in your guesthouse cooked by the help there.
