June is dry with the best underwater visibility of the year, and the cliff stairs are at their safest.

July is dry and busy. Manta Point is worked all year round, so the variable in July is the sea state on the day rather than the month.

August is the driest and busiest month. Day-trip boats from Sanur run at capacity, so start early if you want Kelingking or Angel's Billabong without a queue.

September keeps the dry weather and loses the crowds, which makes it the best all-round month to come.

October is still mostly dry and much quieter, and it is a good pick if you want the cliffs to yourself.

November is where the wet season starts. The clifftop tracks are unpaved and the staircases are steep, so rain changes the walking rather than just the view.

December and January are the wettest months. Storms cut underwater visibility and turn the cliff stairs at Kelingking and Diamond Beach into a real hazard.

If your dates are fixed here, Ubud is the better wet-season base in Bali, and Phu Quoc in Vietnam is mid dry season through both months.

February is wet and the water is usually too stirred up for the diving to be worth the crossing.

March improves through the month, and late March works as a cheap trip if you treat the cliffs as a fair-weather plan. Lombok and Gili Air pair well with it.

The Badung Strait current runs up to about three and a half knots and reverses with the tide. It is why Crystal Bay and Manta Point are drift dives and why operators cancel on days that look calm from shore.

The cliff staircases are the other timing decision. Kelingking and Diamond Beach are long, steep descents on rock and packed earth, so save them for the dry months and for early morning before the heat.
