Taiping, Ipoh Overview
The wettest town in Malaysia and the most underrated stop in Perak, about an hour north-west of Ipoh. The Lake Gardens were laid out on a worked-out tin mine in 1880, and the rain trees leaning over the water are the image the town is known for. Bukit Larut rises straight behind them, reached by government Land Rover rather than your own car, and the colonial core holds the country's oldest museum, oldest prison and oldest railway line.
