St Jerome's Laneway Festival is also known as Laneway Festival or simply Laneway. It was started back in 2005 in Caledonian Lane, Melbourne, Australia. Begun as an event for indie music, the festival grew to immense popularity, and soon it hit five other cities in Australia including Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Western Australia, and Fremantle. Also, it crossed the borders and reached Auckland and Singapore.
It was started by Danny Rogers and Jerome Borazio with a thought that the summers of Melbourne in 2005 would be different and better with amazing live music set up in a unique style. At first, St Jerome's Summer Series was introduced every afternoon on Sunday. Later on, Danny and JeroTme included Brains, a Saturday night monthly. It was a residency for a much famous musical group by the name The Avalanches. Both of them convinced this electro - music group that they would remove the bins, close the lane and should stage a laneway party. This added several promotional materials, and that's how St Jerome’s Laneway Festival began. The first Laneway festival witnessed a crowd of around 1400 people.
The last Laneway festival that was celebrated in Singapore was on 27th January 2018. And now the city is all set to organise the next Laneway festival. Laneway hasn't yet confirmed if it will be held again at Gardens By The Bay or not. In recent few years, the festival hosted several independent Hip Hop and R&B artists, this time we may witness some more varieties. Around 10,000 people attended the last festival.
This festival is all about new and revered seminal music. It brings new and seasoned artists who have something unique and fresh, and give them a unique setting and a stage with a crowd of music enthusiasts from all over. The festival's size, the locations, venues and stages and the way music artists are encouraged here, is unique and the experience, ambience and the aura of this festival is amazing. The interesting thing is that the people who visit concerts can not only sing but also dance with their favourite artists.
The primary strategy behind the success of this music festival is the manner in which the festival organisers grab the spirit of the music in trend also providing the platform to the raw talents and emerging artists from all over. Who doesn't know Mumford & Sons who won Grammy in 2013 made their debut at the festival back in 2010. In the same line, Florence and the Machine, The xx etc. too gained great popularity through the festival. Lorde was also announced to be part of the 2014 festival. It was just one week before her entry into the US charts. So, this is a great place where artists come and showcase their talents.
Laneway Festival made it to Singapore in 2011. A huge crowd of 6,000 people joined together to make this event a hit at Fort Canning Hill. The stage was rocked by bands like !!! (Chk Chk Chk), Foals and The Temper. Ever since the festival made it to Singapore, the stage has welcomed a wide range of artists with versatile music talent including FKA Twigs, Tycho, Nick Murphy etc. In a very short span of time, the festival has been able to gather mass attention and has been named as the seminal indie music festival in Asia - Pacific region.
