Mumbai is quite a safe city, so travelling as a family is not unsafe as such. However, it is best to avoid construction sites and old mill compounds as a precaution. Chowpatty and Aarey Milk Colony should be avoided at night as you are tourists. Bandra is closer to the tourist destinations but will be more expensive than Andheri. Mumbai is close to many picturesque destinations like Lonavala, Matheran and Alibag.
