Adding to these lovely sites is the Alexandra Falls Viewpoint waterfall. The best thing about this waterfall is that it can be visited at any time of the year. Visit this cascade to have a breathtaking view of the cloud forest of Mt Cocotte standing tall at 771 meters.

What's better to look at than a natural waterfall gushing down waters from a high point? Nothing – I repeat – nothing beats that view.

The Hike

Hidden deep in the jungle of the Black River Gorges National Park, Alexandra Falls is something straight out of an Indiana Jones movie scene (although it will be a relief for you to know there will not be any ugly spiders, the size of humans, over there).

As soon as you get to the falls, you will first come across a large car parking area where you will also find refreshment stalls. Energize and hydrate yourself first. While you are at it, have a taste of the fantastic local cuisine served at the stalls. Make sure not to overeat as there will be plenty of walking down the trip.

While you prepare for the view, you will already feel a fresh breeze rushing past your skin. Moving on, you will come across a bridge where a little stream flows. A bridge and a couple of stairs will lead you to the viewpoint. This will hardly take 5 minutes. Once you are there, there is a wooden platform for you to take in the full view of the South-east coast and the turquoise blue ocean. Admire it all you can. Do not miss the chance to capture it on your camera and show it off on social media.

You will be able to spot the falls from where you stand. From there, the waterfall will look like a silent white stream dropping over giant rocks. You will catch the view of Mauritius' virgin green valley which houses an extensive collection of endemic flora and fauna. These eye-catching attractions are a treat for sore eyes.

Best Time To Visit and Things To Do

If you visit during the season, make sure to taste the famous delicacy of the area, 'goyave de chine'. Many visit the falls only to pick the ripe fruit. There are secret pathways that lead to tranquil places, away from the crowd. If you feel like it, while heading back, you will see a small river if you turn right after crossing the small bridge. You will then come across a picturesque path to take a stroll on. The calmness of the area and soothing music of nature will surely lift up your spirits. There are other such pathways hidden in the area. Some lead to different waterfalls, while others lead to natural, undisturbed forests. Spare some time and explore all. You never know what you end up finding.
