Flic en Flac Beach, Mauritius Overview

Once a sleepy little fishing town in Mauritius, today, Flic en Flac has grown to be one of the most popular tourist areas in Mauritius, coming a close second to Grand Baie. With its name translating to ‘Free and Flat Land’, which used to be an old Dutch proverb, Flic en Flac originally started out as a village used as hunting grounds for wild birds and ducks, but today it is one of Mauritius’ foremost tourist destinations, with visitors flocking to the town all year round to soak in the sun and the sea. Situated on the west coast of Mauritius, Flic en Flac is every bit as intriguing and whimsical as its name makes it out to be. With miles and miles of sandy beaches and azure water, Flic en Flac is an idyllic little beach town that is one of the best places in Mauritius to enjoy a vacation amidst the lap of nature.

Flic en Flac Beach

Sun and Sand in all its Glory

Flic en Flac boasts of one of the best beaches in all of Mauritius – an 8-kilometre-long beach that is great not just for sitting back and relaxing by the ocean, but for a wide range of watersports as well. With long stretches of casuarina trees lining the entire waterfront, the west-facing beach is one of the best places in all of Mauritius to sit back and experience a gorgeous sunset. The northern side of the Flic en Flac beach is a little rocky, and the sand is a bit rough compared to other parts of the beach. The southern side, on the other hand, has powder-soft sand and gives you an opportunity to catch a glimpse of Tamarin, which is a village adjacent to Flic en Flac and is nestled in the foothills of a rocky mountain. However, regardless of whichever part of the beach you visit, the two things that will remain a constant are the shallow waves and the white sand.

Catch a Glimpse of the Vibrant Local Lifestyle

The Flic en Flac beach is popular not just with tourists, but with locals as well, and you will spot quite a few families out with picnic baskets on the beach at any given hour during the weekend. The local life of the island is very colourful, and you will more often than not find the locals strumming away on their guitars with people nearby swaying their hips to the beats. The beach is home to a beautiful lagoon protected on all sides by coral reefs, and this is one of the best places to go for a swim or take part in other water sports activities such as scuba diving and snorkelling. Lining the entire stretch of the beach are local eateries and food stalls selling hotdogs, kebabs, and other local dishes. There are plenty of five-star hotels situated right on the beach itself, and a few of these hotels have their cordoned-off private beaches as well. Also lining the beachfront are quite a few pubs and bars, so you can sit down with a cocktail in your hand and admire the mesmerising landscape in front of you. There are several local shops selling beachwear and other souvenirs, so you can take a stroll along the beach and pick up anything that suits your fancy!
