Best Time To Visit Lumbini

December to February is dry and cool, with days between about twenty and twenty-four degrees. That is comfortable walking weather for a site spread over kilometres.

Mornings can be foggy on the plain and clear through the morning. Nights are cold enough to want a jacket, but the days are the point.

March stays dry and warms up quickly. It is the last month before the pre-monsoon heat makes the Sacred Garden hard work.

Come early in the month if you can. By late March the temperature is already climbing towards the April and May peak.

April and May are the two hottest months of the year, averaging about thirty-six degrees, and afternoons on the plain can pass forty.

There is one reason to accept that, and it is Buddha Jayanti. Lumbini's largest observance falls on 1 May in 2026, drawing pilgrims from around the world, and Hindus come the same day to worship Maya Devi as Rupa Devi. Come for the event, not the weather.

June is the hottest month by daily average, with the rain not yet arrived to break the heat.

This is the weakest month of the year here. Very little about an open walking site works well in it.

July is the wettest month of the year, with August close behind, and the Terai is Nepal's flood belt.

September eases as the monsoon retreats, but roads and onward travel stay unreliable until October. Janakpur and Dharan follow the same pattern.

Lumbini sits at about 150 metres on the Terai plain, and the site is a long, low-shade walk. The Maya Devi temple, the Ashokan pillar and the international monastery zone are spread over kilometres of open ground.

That is why heat matters more here than rain. Thirty-six degrees in a city with cafes and indoor sights is manageable; the same figure on an open pilgrimage route is not. For cool air in the same month, Nagarkot and Bhaktapur up in the hills run more than ten degrees cooler in April.
