Galeria Perdana, Langkawi Overview

Galeria Perdana is a magnificent museum in Langkawi established in 1995 exhibiting gifts, souvenirs and awards received by former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr Mahatir. Expanded in an area of 5.3 square kilometres, the museum is beautified with various paintings, crafts, instruments, jewellery, souvenirs, weapons etc. fabricated from porcelain, crystal, silver and textile.

Also known as Sri Perdana Gallery, the museum is located in the proximity to many other fascinating destinations like Langkawi Nature Park, Durian Perangin Waterfall, etc. The two-storey building is divided into three interlinked blocks, named A, B and C with different antiques. Experience the heavenly serene environment in the landscaped garden situated in the museum itself.  Buy yourself a souvenir from the antique retail shop housed inside the museum. A reading room with lots of books and reference material and a trendy café is a not to miss places in Galeria Perdana.

1. Architecture & Exhibits

  • The architecture of the building is intricate and interesting. The traditional Malaysian architecture is used for the fabrication of the building.

  • The interior of the museum is decorated with oriental rugs, silverware, crystal antiques, dolls, musical instruments and Islamic textile and art housed in three different blocks.  
  • Block A is equipped with gift items made up of lacquer, crystal, glass and wood. There are also some musical instruments and beautiful gemstones showcased in the first block.
  • The second section or Block B is full of exquisitely crafted items of silver, bronze, pewter etc. 
  • The third block or block C has a lot of bling jewellery items and painting. 
  • There is also a well-known creative antique at the entrance of block C named "Window of Opportunity'' which is a 3-meter sculptor made entirely of stones.

2. History

Situated in the Kilim Village Area, Galeria Perdana was established by Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Bin Mohammad to exhibit and showcase the souvenirs and gifts received by them from different (Read More) officials and guests. The realisation by the prime minister for accessing the gifts and awards as a public property inspired him to start the science museum. After the construction of the museum, the prime minister went into exile at the secluded island embracing a punishment. To pay patronage, gratitude and appreciation to the patrons, the former prime minister constructed the Galeria Perdana.

How to Reach Galeria Perdena

Ferry: Take a ferry from Kedah jetty and reach Kuah Jetty which is the most proximate jetty stop from Galeria Perdana. The charges of the ferry vary from RM 15 to RM 25. Take a taxi thereafter for a 10 minutes' drive.

Taxi: Hop into a taxi from Kuah Town for a 30-40 minutes’ drive towards the Jalan Ayer Hangat road to reach Galeria Perdana.
