National Planetarium, Kuala Lumpur Overview

Situated on the hilltop to the east of Lake Garden in Kuala Lumpur, Planetarium Negara is the National Planetarium of Malaysia. Devoted to astronomical and scientific wonders, the planetarium is crowned with a blue dome and comprises of a Space Theatre, exhibition halls and provides hands-on experiments.

Planetarium Negara consists of some copies of Indian and Chinese observatories and is spread over an area of 1,20,000 square feet. Different films are screened in an Omnimax-style on the inner ceiling of the dome with the screen giving a panoramic view. For the adventurous people, there is a human-sized gyroscopic Space Ball at the planetarium which can whirl the people.

A UV-lit lift, referred to as the Galeri Pemandangan, brings the visitors to observatory gallery where they can have an impression of the town and catch sight of other planets using the telescope. Mini Planetarium Negara libraries houses books mainly on astronomy and science and also other subjects like philosophy and social science.

4:00 PM - Astronaut 
No screening takes place from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Fridays

Exhibitions at Planetarium Negara

Planetarium Negara hosts a permanent exhibition in its halls focused on space science with its engaging exhibits and touch-screen interactive computers. The exhibition showcases Arianne IV space engine, the engine which was employed to launch Malaysia’s first satellite MEASAT 1, first Malaysian astronaut’s space suit along with the meal packs that he got hold of when he went to space and a 14-inch telescope. A space theme park at the National Museum of Malaysia is also connected to the planetarium via a pedestrian bridge which houses replicas of old observatories.

Space Theatre

The Space Theatre of the National Planetarium screens space films and international science-based films as well as exclusive documentaries all through the day. Short clips from famous movies such as Star Wars are also shown at times.

How to Reach Planetarium Negara

Planetarium Negara can be reached by self-driving or a taxi. Parking facility is available free of cost.

KTM Komuter: The nearest station is old Kuala Lumpur station from where the planetarium is at a walkable distance.

MRT: The National Museum MRT Station is located close by and provides access to the planetarium via a pedestrian bridge. It is also a short walk away from the Kuala Lumpur railway station.

A Shuttle service is available from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport to the Planetarium.

Go - KL City Bus is a free bus service which operates in Kuala Lumpur and serves the planetarium.
