What is the best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City?

The best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City is December to April, the dry season, when days run around 22°C to 33°C with very little rain. February is the driest month and April the hottest, regularly touching 35°C.

May to November is the rainy season and September is the wettest month. It rarely rains all day though: the pattern is a heavy late-afternoon downpour that clears, so the city stays workable and rates are lower.

Being a city, it works in any month. The one date to check is Tet, in late January or February, when much of it closes for several days. Nha Trang runs the opposite calendar if you want a beach alongside.

Ho Chi Minh City in Dry Season (December to April)

Temperature: 22°C at night to 33°C by day, hottest in April.
Weather: Dry and sunny with very little rain. February is the driest month of the year.
Crowds: The busiest and priciest months, peaking over Christmas, New Year and Tet.
Tip: The window for walking Districts 1 and 3, the markets and the Mekong Delta day trips. Book well ahead around Tet.

Ho Chi Minh City in Wet Season (May to November)

Temperature: 24°C to 32°C, humid.
Weather: The rainy season. Usually a heavy downpour in the late afternoon that clears within an hour or two, rather than all-day rain. September is the wettest month.
Crowds: Lower, with the best hotel rates of the year.
Tip: Plan sightseeing for mornings and keep afternoons for the War Remnants Museum, the markets and the cafes. Streets in low-lying districts flood briefly after heavy rain.

Tet in Ho Chi Minh City

Tet, the Lunar New Year, falls in late January or February and is the one date that changes a trip to Vietnam.

What happens: the city decorates and the flower street on Nguyen Hue is worth seeing, but many restaurants, shops and museums close for three to five days, and domestic flights and trains book out weeks ahead.

What to do about it: either come deliberately for the atmosphere and accept that half the city is shut, or check the dates and travel either side of it. Do not book it by accident.

Day Trips from Ho Chi Minh City

Most trips out of the city work all year, but they are more comfortable in the dry months.

Mekong Delta, Cai Be and Cai Rang floating markets: December to April is the most comfortable. The delta is at its highest water from September to November.
Cu Chi Tunnels: any month, though the tunnels are hot and close work in the humidity.
Vung Tau and Mui Ne beaches: December to April.
Da Lat highlands: December to March, when it is dry and cool.
