Renewal of Passport: Step-by-Step Guide on How To Renew Passport in India

What do you do if your passport has expired or near its expiration date?

The process for renewal or reissue of passport has become extremely convenient and user-friendly in India with the online Passport Seva website portal and even an app. The hassle of running around with physical documents has been reduced to a bare minimum.

How To Renew Passport Online: Procedure for Renewal of Passport

  • If you are travelling to a foreign country, your visa must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival
  • You may only apply for renewal 1 year before the date on which your passport is expiring
  • The validity of the passport is decided by the Assistant Passport Officer and the maximum an Indian passport is valid for is up to 10 years at a time.
  • Along with being able to renew your passport online through, there is now an app, mPassport Seva, to pay, apply for and schedule appointments for the same.
  • The steps to register on the website or the app are very simple and self-explanatory. You are required to fill some particulars and then schedule your appointment at the nearby Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or the Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) by confirming your slot (day & date).
  • You can reschedule your appointment, but if you do not visit the centre within 90 days of filling the form online, you will be required to fill the form again and pay the fees again too.
