Vietnam is a fast-growing destination for Indian travellers, popular for its scenic limestone bays, rich street food culture, historic cities, and budget-friendly travel. Indian passport holders usually need a visa, with the Vietnam e-Visa being the easiest option. This guide covers the latest visa rules, application process, fees, and entry requirements.

Vietnam Visa for Indians

Indian passport holders are eligible to apply for a Vietnam e-Visa online before travel. Vietnam does not currently offer visa-free entry for Indians.

Visa Type (Updated Structure)

  • Tourist e-Visa (single or multiple entry)
  • Valid for up to 90 days
  • Available for single-entry and multiple-entry options (expanded system)
  • Applied fully online before arrival

Key Rule

Visa on arrival is only granted if you arrive with an official pre-approved approval letter issued by the relevant immigration authority before your trip. Without this document, you will not be eligible for a visa on arrival, and since obtaining it in advance can be complicated and time-sensitive, it is generally not recommended for most tourists.

e-Visa is the most reliable and widely used method.

Processing Time

  • Standard processing: 3–5 working days
  • In peak seasons or holidays: may take 5–7 working days
  • Travellers are advised to apply at least 2 weeks before departure

Key Documents Required

For Vietnam e-Visa, Indian applicants typically need:

  • Passport (valid for at least 6 months from entry date)
  • Passport-size photograph (white background, recent)
  • Scanned passport biodata page
  • Valid email ID for receiving e-Visa approval
  • Travel details (entry/exit points, address in Vietnam)

Vietnam e-Visa Fees

  • Government fee: USD 25 (single entry)
  • Multiple-entry visa: USD 50

Payment is made online during application. The fee is non-refundable, even if the application is refused.

FAQs on Vietnam

Q1. Can I enter Vietnam through any airport or border with an e-Visa?

No separate transit visa is required in most cases if you are only transiting through Vietnam and remain within the international transit area of the airport. However, if you need to leave the airport or go through immigration, you must obtain a valid Vietnam visa or e-Visa in advance.

Vietnam’s e-Visa is not a transit-flexible visa. It is issued for specific travel plans and is valid only for the entry and exit points selected during the application. You must enter and exit through the approved ports listed in your visa, and changes are not permitted after approval.

Q2. Is Vietnam e-Visa always multiple-entry?

No. Most Vietnam e-Visas issued are single-entry only. Once you exit Vietnam, the visa becomes invalid. Multiple-entry visas are available only in limited cases depending on current policy.

Q3. What payment methods are accepted for Vietnam e-Visa?

Payment is made online through the official e-Visa portal, usually via international debit or credit cards. The visa fee is generally non-refundable, even if the application is rejected.

Q4. Can immigration officers still ask for documents after e-Visa approval?

Yes. Even with an approved e-Visa, immigration officers may request supporting documents such as return flight tickets, hotel bookings, proof of funds, or travel itinerary at entry.

Q5. What happens if someone overstays in Vietnam?

Overstaying is strictly penalised and may lead to fines, deportation, delays in exit clearance, or future entry bans depending on the severity of the overstay. If your itinerary includes any other part of Vietnam at any stage, you must obtain a Vietnam e-Visa before travel.
