When Will it Commence? The phase 1 operations of the East-West metro services will be flagged off by the Railway Minister Piyush Goel on February 13, 2020, and will be open to passengers from the next day. According to the claims of Kolkata Metro railway Metro Corporation (KMRC), this impeccable new development reduces 90 minutes to a fraction of seconds.
First of Its Kind in IndiaThe East-West corridor which signalled many firsts in the country is a remarkable accomplishment by the Indian Railways. It is the second metro line of Kolkata nearly after three decades. The first one which currently connects northern region 'Dum Dum' to the southern region 'Garia' was introduced in 1984.
The Connecting StationsAlthough the underwater metro service is not operational at present, it is set to be completed by March 2022. Once it's finished, it will connect Salt Lake Sector V to Howrah Maidan and is expected to carry about 2 lakh people daily. However, for now, the East-West corridor will connect the six stations like Sector V, Karunamoyee, Central Park, City Centre, Bengal Chemical and Salt Lake Stadium along the route covering 12 kilometres.
The East-West corridor has secured its place in the pages of transportation history of India. This technological marvel is expected to reduce time and travel cost and makes people's lives hassle-free.
