A majestic structure that reflects the relics of 12th century is a Fort of Bhuvanagiri or Bhongir constructed by Tribhuvanamalla Vikramaditya, a Chalukya ruler. Sprawling over an area of 40 acres, this fort is nestled atop of a hill nearly 500 feet above the ground level. Renowned for its impressive architecture and geometric structure, the fort is oval shaped and comprises of two entry points. In fact, the fort is also bastioned with fosse which makes it completely impregnable.

A Buddhist town that flaunts age-old tools, Buddhist stupas, statues, monasteries and scriptures; Nagarjunakonda is one of the famous Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India. Located 150km from Hyderabad, near the Nagarjuna Sagar Reservoir, the town is believed to have been existed for almost 1800 years. Excavations have revealed ancient artefacts that are proof of Buddhist civilisation. It is also said that the famous Buddhist monk Nagarjuna after whom this place is named, lived here and preached during the 2nd century AD.

At a distance of about 29 kms form Mahbubnagar, this fort draws history enthusiasts and explorers in heavy numbers. Though its interiors have not stood well the test of time, the fort nevertheless makes for a wondrous sight upon visiting. That’s partly got to do with the way one gets to enter the fort. Plodding through a weathered canyon to reach the hilltop, you pass through 7 gates to be finally greeted by the fort. It makes for quite a memorable experience!
