Nagarjunakonda Tourism

Nagarjunakonda or Nagajuna Hills is located 150 km from Hyderabad, near the Nagarjuna Sagar Reservoir in the Nalgonda District of Andhra Pradesh. Excavations have revealed that Buddhist civilizations existed here almost 1800 years ago, scriptures and artifacts have been found to give evidence of this fact.

It is also said that the famous Buddhist monk Nagarjuna after whom this place is named, lived here and preached during the 2nd century AD. Owing to this, Nagarjunakonda was discovered around 1926 and is revered as a significant historic site, for Buddhism scholars and followers this is a pilgrim spot. For regular tourists, this place happens to be a great weekend getaway.

More on Nagarjunakonda

The local cuisine here is predominated by rich spices. Owing to it's history of Persian rulers and it's own traditions, the food found here is an efficient mix of different cultures. Telugu, Persian and Hyderabadi style of cooking all find a delicious blend in the local cuisine.

Starting from Vijayawada, take the first ferry at 9:30 AM to the Nagarjunakonda. Your first stop would be the Nagarjunasagar dam which surrounds the Nagarjunakonda island. On reaching the island, you can check into a hotel if you're in for 2-dayay stay or proceed directly to the caves. You can spend the day exploring both the caves situated underground and on the hilltop and check out the museum. You can have lunch at one of the restaurants which majorly have South Indian food.

After this, you can take the last ferry at around 2:30 PM back to Vijayawada or stay for the night. If you're staying a bit longer, you can explore the caves and the hill with ease and more time to spare. In the evening, you can stroll around the place or play some sports offered by one of the resorts. Next day, you can take the first boat out and on your way back to the mainland, enjoy the cool mornings near the dam; you can even take a bath at the waterfall.

- Summers are extremely hot here so make sure you check the weather before you plan a trip.- Be sure to make advanced bookings at the hotels especially if you're going for the weekend.- Carry torches, good shoes and a backpack to use while exploring the caves, they involve a bit of a climb.- Even if you're not staying for the night, carry an extra change of clothes in case you get wet while exploring the dam and the waterfall.
