Clock Tower, Seychelles Overview

Eerily resembling the Big Ben of London, the Clock Tower stands in the center of Mahe, representing the Franco-English history of the island. Built in the UK and shipped to Seychelles, it was commissioned by the then governor of Seychelles- Sir Ernest Bickham Sweet-Escott in memory of Queen Victoria.

Construction of the tower began in 1903, and the landmark turned 115 years old in 2018. Known locally in Creole as Lorloz, serves as the centrepiece of Victoria. Despite the ardent modernization around Victoria that happened in the following century, the Lorloz remained virtually unchanged and is a firm reminder of Seychelle's past.
