Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman, Kuala Lumpur Overview

Located in Jalan Stonor in Kuala Lumpur, Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman is a glorious wooden stilt house. One of the oldest wooden houses in Malaysia, it is known for its vernacular style of architecture. Adorned with antique furniture and artefacts, the heritage structure was constructed by some of the most skilled Malaysian artisans in the early 1900s.

While the house was initially owned by Mukim Bagan Samak’s local headman, it was later restored by the leading national heritage NGO, Badan Warisan Malaysia. Guided tour of Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman is available which provides an insight into the traditional Malaysian lifestyle and culture.

History

Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman means Village Leader Abu Seman's House. The wooden house was constructed in stages between 1910-1930s. The house was initially situated in a small Malaysian village named Kampung Sungai Kechil. After Mukim Bagan Samak’s local headman passed away, this property was inherited by his son, Ibrahim bin Abu Seman. Since Abu Seman passed away without an heir, the property was rescued and relocated to Badan Warisan Malaysia Heritage Centre in Jalan Stonor.
