August to September: The Sweet Spot

August is the driest month of the year and September is close behind. The air sits at twenty-seven to twenty-nine degrees, the sea at twenty-four to twenty-five, and there is no stinger or cyclone season.

This is the cleanest window Cairns has. The Cairns Festival runs late August into early September, ten days across the city, landing squarely inside it.

June to July: Dry, Cool and Stinger-Free

June and July are dry and the coolest months of the year, around twenty-six degrees by day and seventeen overnight.

July has the coldest water of the year, at about twenty-four degrees. That is noticeably cool for repeated all-day snorkelling without a suit, which a shorty or the operator's suit solves.

October: The Last Clean Month, and Coral Spawning

October is the last month before the two hazard seasons begin, staying dry at about thirty degrees with the sea back up to twenty-six.

It also carries a once-a-year draw. Reefs in the inner Great Barrier Reef spawn in the week after October's full moon, which sits at the very lowest-risk edge of the stinger season and before the rain arrives.

November to December: Stingers and Cyclones Begin

The marine stinger season and the cyclone season both start in November. Stinger season runs November to May and covers box jellyfish and Irukandji; the official cyclone season is 1 November to 30 April.

Swimming happens in stinger suits during the season, which reef operators supply. December is also the hottest month, and Cyclone Jasper in December 2023 brought record flooding to the region.

January to March: The Wettest and the Worst

February is the worst month of the year by a wide margin. It is the wettest, it is mid-stinger season and it is mid-cyclone season, with January and March barely better.

The rain is on a different scale here. January 1981 recorded well over a metre in a single month, and wet-season river plumes carry sediment onto the inshore reef, cutting the clarity.

April to May: The Rain Goes, the Stingers Stay

April and May see the rain fall away sharply, but the stinger season runs to the end of May and the cyclone season to the end of April.

So May is better than it looks and still not clean. If you want the reef without a stinger suit, wait for June.

Why the Warmest Water Is the Wrong Target

The best months for the reef have the coolest water, and that catches people out. July's sea is the year's coldest at about twenty-four degrees, while January's is bath-warm at twenty-nine.

Optimising for warm water books you straight into stinger and cyclone season. A shorty or the operator's stinger suit solves the June to September cool; nothing solves February. Adelaide in the south has the opposite calendar, with its rain in the southern winter.
