Besakih Temple, Bali Overview
Pura Besakih, Bali's largest and holiest temple, spreads across the slopes of Mount Agung and is made up of more than 80 individual shrines organised around three main temples dedicated to Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Believed to be at least 2,000 years old, it remains the mother temple for Balinese Hindus island-wide. Entry requires a sarong and includes a mandatory local guide, so budget extra time and be prepared to negotiate the guide fee.

Places to See
The main temple is the Pura Penataran Agung or the Great Temple of State. This temple is the largest in the entire complex and comprises of different areas which are symbolic of the seven different layers of the universe.
Pura Batu Tirtha:
Pura Batu Tirtha is a sacred place in the temple premises from where the holy water is sourced and collected to perform the different temple rituals.
The Four Main Temples:
The compass of the points between the four temples is said to depict the place where Lord Vishnu descended on the Earth and it acts as evidence how the divine powers interrelate with the world. These four temples include Pura Batu Madeg in the north, Pura Kiduling Kreteg to the south, Pura Gelap in the east, and Pura Ulun Kulkul in the west.
Setra Agung- Burial grounds:
To the south of the temple complex, one will find the sacred burial grounds along with ancient and mythical statues of the Garuda bird of Hindu mythology.

- At the temple, it is important to dress appropriately and cover your legs and shoulders.
- One can also use a sarong for the same. There are also many shop vendors nearby from where one can rent clothes for IDR 50 to IDR 100.
- While making the payments, make sure to carry cash as they do not accept cards.
- Lastly, hire a local guide who will give interesting information and narrate exciting anecdotes about the place to make for an enriching experience.

How To Reach Besakih Temple
- Besakih Temple is located at a high altitude of almost 1000 meters above sea level on the slopes of the famous Mount Agung.
- If one is traveling from Kuta, Seminyak, Jimbaran, and Denpasa then take the Kusamba Bypass to Klungkung.
- There is no public transport available to reach Besakih Temple so it is advisable to hire a private car to the place.
