Sagar Shiv Mandir, Mauritius Overview

Being a dominant Hindu country, Mauritius is home to many temples spread out in every nook and corner of the island. Sagar Shiv Mandir sits on a small islet close to the mainland, connected via a land bridge. The islet is known as Goyave de Chine, and it can be found in the eastern part of Mauritius, at Poste de Flacq. Sagar Shiv Mandir is a place of worship for the settled Hindus in Mauritius, and it is visited by tourists as well. The temple is primarily the abode to Lord Shiva along with other Hindu deities including Goddess Lakshmi and Hanuman.

The construction of the Sagar Shiv Mandir began in the late 1970s. An extensive renovation was completed in 2007, and it was only possible because of the financial support provided by the Ghonuwa family, who invested a great deal of money for the construction of this religious site. The Mandir is about 1800 feet above sea level, and it hosts a 108 feet tall bronze statue of Lord Shiva. This enormous statue is known as Mangal Mahadev.

The small islet of Goyave de Chine enjoys a privileged location in a small bay with two famous Mauritian hotels beside it. One of them being Prince Maurice, which is among the first luxury hotels of the island and on the right – Saint Geran, which is named after the story related to the novel of Paul and Virginie.

The thin bridge connecting the temple to the mainland makes it easy to visit. Before that, worshippers had to wade through the water to reach the temple. Quite interestingly, there is a similar temple like the Sagar Shiv Mandir in Trinidad and Tobago known as the ‘Temple in the Sea’.

The peaceful surroundings of the temple are loved by the locals and tourists alike where they can sit and contemplate while soaking in the holy vibe. One must be respectfully dressed for visiting the temple and must remove their shoes before entering. The watery landscape makes it the perfect spot for constant prayers and contemplation.
