Best Time To Visit Dharan

January and February stay dry and mild, with January averaging about twenty-three degrees by day, which is the easiest time to walk up to the Dantakali temple at Bijayapur.

Nights are cool rather than cold. This is a much easier winter than the Kathmandu valley, which sits more than a thousand metres higher.

March and April are warm and mostly dry, and this is where Dharan parts company with the Terai. Its maximum never passes about thirty-three degrees in any month of the year.

So April still works here. Down on the plain at Janakpur and Lumbini, April is disqualifying. At Dharan's 349 metres it is merely warm.

May is when the rain arrives, and in eastern Nepal it arrives early. Dharan is already properly wet in May while the western Terai is still dry.

Sakela Ubhauli falls on 1 May in 2026, the spring counterpart to Udhauli, observed across the same eastern hills.

July is the wettest month of the year, with August close behind. June to September carries about eighty per cent of Dharan's annual rainfall.

Dharan is one of Nepal's wettest towns, taking well over what Kathmandu or the western Terai get across a year. This is not a stretch to travel in.

September is still very wet, and the rain only really collapses through October.

October is the turning point. Early October is still wet; by the end of the month the foothills have dried out and the season has opened.

Dharan sits at about 349 metres at the foot of the Siwalik hills, which is why it behaves differently from the Terai below it. Its hottest month averages about thirty-three degrees, against about thirty-five at Janakpur and nearly thirty-seven at Lumbini.

The reason is its rain. Dharan is already wet in May while the western plain is still dry, and that early onset caps the pre-monsoon heat. You get a usable April in exchange for a shorter dry season than Bhaktapur or the valley.
