Museum of Siam, Bangkok Overview

Situated in Phra Nakorn on Sanam Chai street, the Museum of Siam is an interactive museum that combines modern with the old in an innovative artistic way to tell the story of Thailand. The exhibits are displayed from the very beginning of Ayutthaya to the daily life and highlights of Thai history, wars, Buddhism, and Thailand's entry into the modern world.The free audio guide is available at the ticket counter.

It is housed in a neo-classical structure and from the outside, it is impossible to guess what the inside looks like. With clever use of art, the unique museum manages to captivate the visitor and spark his curiosity for exploring Thai culture. The Museum of Siam successfully manages to encourage youngsters to think deeply about Thai history, Thai customs, and traditions.

Exploring the Museum of Siam

The entrance of the museum is reminiscent of the old architecture complete with the balustraded staircase, windows, archways and the columns. You are in for a surprise as you move into the first room that throws some interactive display at you and prompts you to watch a film. The film will give you a brief with regards to the journey ahead. Museum of Siam uses technology in form of television sets that play Thai programs to explain the transition of Thailand of yesteryears into a more westernised version that it is today.

Step into the café that is styled to give you a feel of the sixties. As you step out don’t forget to visit the quaint shop on the corner that displays food ingredients that is used in Thai cuisines. And the journey doesn’t end yet as you are invited to step into the refrigerator which may seem strange at first but as you accept to pass through, you will be rewarded for your act of bravery. This refrigerator actually leads into a restaurant that is full of wax displays of Thai food. It may not appease the taste buds but will make for some great clicks for the shutterbugs.

Zones

Museum of Siam is divided into three zones namely the Discovery, Collection and Knowledge. Each zone serves the function as per its name so in the first section you will discover facts on Thai history through interaction, in the second section you will be exposed to the culture, traditions and art while in the third section you will learn more about the land.

How To Reach Museum of Siam

Museum of Siam is located on the west side of Sanam Chai road, in the district of Phra Nakorn which is part of the island of Rattanakosin. If you wish to travel by ferry, you can take the express boat on Chao Phraya and reach Tha Tien from where you can walk it down to the museum. Buses and cabs can also be used to reach the destination easily.
