Eating your way through Malaysia

Malaysia's food is three cuisines that have lived alongside each other for generations, and the best meals are the cheapest ones. Nasi lemak for breakfast, char kway teow from a wok that has never cooled, laksa in a dozen regional versions, roti canai at any hour. Penang is the place people travel for specifically, and George Town's hawker centres are the reason. For Indian travellers there is an easy landing: Brickfields in KL and Little India in George Town serve banana-leaf meals and proper South Indian breakfasts, and vegetarian food is available everywhere rather than as an afterthought. Sabah, the northern state, is where most visitors go: Kota Kinabalu as the base, the orangutan rehabilitation centre at Sepilok, the proboscis monkeys and river cruises on the Kinabatangan, Mount Kinabalu for climbers, and Sipadan off the east coast, which is regularly named among the best dive sites on earth and limits permits to a small number a day.
