Ooty sits at 2,240 metres in the Nilgiri Hills, the most visited hill station in Tamil Nadu. The UNESCO Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam through tea estates and tunnels, the Botanical Gardens, Doddabetta Peak at 2,637 metres and Ooty Lake are the main draws. It's the most developed hill station in South India for tourism infrastructure and gets crowded in summer and long weekends — October to December is generally more relaxed.

Kodaikanal sits at 2,133 metres in the Palani Hills, higher and often mistier than Ooty. The star-shaped Kodai Lake, Coaker's Walk along the valley edge, Guna Cave and the dense shola forest walks around Pillar Rocks are the main attractions. It has a more secluded character than Ooty and suits travelers who prefer a quieter hill station experience.

Known For : Sim's Park Dolphin's Nose Ketti Valley
Coonoor is the second-largest Nilgiri hill station at 1,930 metres, 19 km from Ooty and significantly less crowded. Sim's Park with its collection of roses and ferns, the Ketti Valley viewpoint, Lamb's Rock and a section of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway pass through here. It works well as a quieter alternative base to Ooty or as a day trip from the main town.

Yercaud sits at 1,515 metres in the Shevaroy Hills above Salem, with coffee and orange plantations, a lake, the Shevaroy Temple and the Kiliyur Falls. It gets considerably fewer visitors than the Nilgiri hill stations and accommodation and food costs are lower. The Lady's Seat viewpoint and the Botanical Garden fill a relaxed visit. It's 4-5 hours from Chennai making it a practical weekend option for travelers from the north of Tamil Nadu.

Known For : Punganur Lake Nature Park Jalagamparai Falls
Yelagiri is a compact hill station in Vellore district at 1,100 metres, composed of 14 villages spread across a plateau reached by 14 hairpin bends from the plains. The Punganur Lake, Jalagamparai Falls, Nature Park and the Swamimalai Trek are the main draws. At just 3 hours from Chennai it's one of the most accessible hill stations in Tamil Nadu for travelers from the north of the state.

Meghamalai, the High Wavy Mountains, is a tea estate plateau in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu at around 1,500 metres, accessible through a forest road that requires a permit and a guide. The Meghamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, cardamom and tea plantations and the general remoteness of the location make it one of Tamil Nadu's most undisturbed hill destinations. Entry is restricted to manage visitor numbers and the roads are not suitable for large vehicles.
Kolli Hills in Namakkal district is reached via 70 continuous hairpin bends, one of the most dramatic ascents to any Tamil Nadu hill station. The Arapaleeswarar Temple at the top, the Agaya Gangai waterfall and the medicinal herb gardens are the main draws. The descent on the other side toward the plains is equally dramatic. It's relatively unknown outside Tamil Nadu which keeps visitor numbers low.

Known For : Elk Falls Longwood Shola Trekking
The oldest of the three main Nilgiri hill stations at 1,793 metres and the least visited, Kotagiri offers a quieter alternative to Ooty and Coonoor. Catherine Falls — the second highest waterfall in Tamil Nadu — is accessible from here, as are the Elk Falls, the Longwood Shola forest reserve and the Kodanad View Point over the Nilgiri foothills. It's best approached as part of a Nilgiris circuit rather than a standalone trip.

Wildlife sightings on the estate roads — particularly gaur and lion-tailed macaques — are a specific draw.
Known For : Kolukkumalai Tea Estate
Kolukkumalai straddles the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border in the Theni district at around 2,130 metres and is home to the world's highest tea plantations. The sunrise over the Palani Hills from the estate is the primary draw, and the jeep ride up through the tea rows from Suryanelli is part of the experience. The Kolukkumalai Tea Estate factory produces tea from orthodox processing methods still used from the British era.

The Velliangiri Hills or Sapthagiri — Seven Hills — are in Coimbatore district on the Kerala border, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The trek to the summit involves crossing all seven hills and takes a full day, passing through forest with significant wildlife. The Adiyogi Shiva statue at the Isha Yoga Centre at the base of the hills is a major landmark. The trek season is typically November to April.

Sirumalai is a forested hill area in Dindigul district at 1,600 metres, covering around 60,000 acres of reserve forest protected by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. Trekking trails, diverse flora and birdlife are the main draws. There is limited tourist infrastructure — it suits day-trip trekkers from Dindigul and Madurai rather than overnight hill station stays.

The Anaimalai Hills, or Elephant Hills, form the southern boundary of the Western Ghats across Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park covers the Tamil Nadu portion, with Valparai as the main base. The Topslip forest area within the sanctuary is known for elephant, tiger and leopard sightings. Guided jeep safaris and nature treks are available through the forest department.

The Javadi Hills stretch across Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts in Tamil Nadu at an average elevation of around 900 metres. The Vainu Bappu Observatory at Kavalur — one of India's major astronomical observatories — takes advantage of the clear dark skies here. Forest treks, the Amirthi Zoological Park and the Adaiyur waterfall are accessible from the hills. It's around 4 hours from Chennai.

The Pachamalai Hills are 80 km north of Tiruchirappalli, a green hill range through which the Sweata Nadi and Kallar rivers flow. The Pachamalai Nature Tourism Complex, trekking trails, medicinal plant gardens and the tribal villages of the Malasar community are the main draws. It's one of the less visited Eastern Ghats hill destinations in Tamil Nadu and suits travelers looking for a short trek-and-nature weekend from Trichy or Salem.

Manjolai is a tea estate plateau in the Tirunelveli district at around 1,162 metres, 70 km from Tirunelveli. The Manimuthar and Karayar dams, the Upper Kodayar reservoir, Papanasam Falls and the tea estate drives through the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve buffer zone are the draws. Access requires a pass through the forest department and the road through the reserve is restricted to specific timings.
Tamil Nadu's hill stations fall across two mountain systems. The Nilgiri cluster — Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri and the surrounding tea country — is the most visited and most developed for tourism. The Western Ghats destinations further south, including Valparai, Meghamalai and Anaimalai, are less crowded and more wildlife-focused. The Eastern Ghats destinations — Yercaud, Yelagiri, Kolli Hills, Javadi Hills and Pachamalai — are less visited than the Nilgiris but offer a quieter experience at generally lower prices and closer to Chennai.
