Sathuragiri Hills, Tamil Nadu Overview

Chathuragiri or the Sathuragiri Hills are found in the Madurai District of Tamil Nadu. It is believed that this is the meeting point of the four Vedas and is the abode of God. The sacred hills are a religious centre for pilgrims and Shiva bhakti. Reaching Sathuragiri involves a full-day upward trek through a hilly, rock-cut terrain with accompanying streams of clear water. There are two main temples at the top of the hill.

  • Road: From either of the abovementioned places, there are taxis and auto rickshaws available to Thaanipaarai. If taking a bus, you will have to switch buses at Vathirairuppu and take a mini bus in the morning or evening.
  • From Thaanipaarai, reaching the Sathuragiri Hills require a 4-7 hour upword trek and a 3-5 hour downward trek.

  • There are two temples on this hill. Sundara Mahalingam Temple is the main temple here where the more renowned mahalingam is seen. On its left, around 4 km away, is the Santhana mahalingam Temple.
  • There is also a Gorakunda (Goraknathar Cave) on the way to the top through which a stream flows. It is said to be the home Goraknathar, a main siddha of Sathuragiri - a devout Shiva bhakt.
  • This entire region is known for Shiva bhakti as these ghats are said to have been blessed by Shiva and Parvati.

  • A shelter is available for those who wish to stay the night at the top of the hill.
