FAQs on Beaches in Koh Samui

Which is the best beach in Koh Samui?

Chaweng for length, facilities and swimming, if you do not mind the crowds and the noise. Choeng Mon on the north-east corner is the best compromise: sheltered, swimmable and far quieter.

Where should families stay?

Choeng Mon, Bo Phut or Mae Nam. All three are calm, shallow near the shore and close to food without being on a nightlife strip. Chaweng and Lamai are livelier and louder.

Which beaches are good for sunset?

The west coast: Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam. The trade-off is that the water there goes very shallow at low tide, so it is better for the view than for swimming.

When is the sea calm?

Roughly February to September on the east coast. The Gulf monsoon runs late October to December and brings the roughest water and most cancelled boats, though Samui stays warm throughout.

Are there quiet beaches left?

Bang Po and Lipa Noi on the north and west coasts, and the small coves like Silver Beach between Chaweng and Lamai. Silver is tiny and gets busy by mid-morning, so go early.
