Choeng Mon Beach, Koh Samui Overview

Blessed with coconut trees that line its soft, white sand shores, Choeng Mon Beach is a lesser known beach getaway in Koh Samui. Essentially a series of bays on the northeast tip of Koh Samui, it has a charming, quiet ambience that’s ideal for families and couples. Additionally, it is well-known for its expat population.

Back in 2000, there was little on Choeng Mon beach other than coconut plantations and huts, but it has rapidly developed in the last two decades to include beach shacks, resorts, and a back road lined with shops like minimarts, ATMs, pharmacies, and even a beauty salon. It is around 1.5 kilometres long which can sometimes make it feel a little crowded, but it’s one of those beaches where you one always find a cosy spot for yourself unlike the island’s more commercial beaches.

Things to Do at Choeng Mon Beach

  • Choeng Mon Beach is ideal for lazing around. The warm, calm waters are perfect to enjoy a quick swim. Families with children will especially love the beach as the waters are not as deep as other parts of Koh Samui. There aren’t any lifeguards apart from the ones at the resorts, so it’s still a good idea to keep an eye out.

  • Close to the beach is Ko Fan Noi, a small island that’s actually walkable by foot during low tide. When the tides are a little higher, one can opt for kayaking to the inlet instead. There isn’t much to do there but walk the beaches and enjoy the experience of a private island.

  • Searobin Dive Centre is located at the main road before Choeng Mon Beach. One can opt for a range of PADI training courses in close-by islands. Along the beach are small kiosks where locals rent out jet skis and paddleboards, but do not that these aren’t official water sports providers.

How To Reach Choeng Mon Beach

Choeng Mon Beach is 5.4 kilometres (15 minutes) north from Koh Samui International Airport, 3.3 kilometres (10 minutes) east from Big Buddha Beach, 8.5 kilometres (19 minutes) east from Bophut Beach, and 8.6 kilometres (20 minutes) north from Chaweng Beach.

Because of its location in north-east Koh Samui, Choeng Mon Beach is not easily accessible by songthaews or public buses. It’s ideal to rent a taxi or car. The beach is accessible by Route 4171 and the main entry to the beach is near Don Vito Restaurant. A taxi from the airport or Bophut Beach would be approximately THB 300. From other parts of Koh Samui like Chaweng Beach or Lamai Beach, the cost would start at THB 500 one way.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit is the months from December to April when there’s little rain and plenty of sunny days. For those who love hanging out at the beach and taking part in water sports, these are the best times to be at Choeng Mon Beach.

For a budget trip, it’s ideal to visit from October to December when the island sees the most rain with some sunshine hours in a day. During these months, flight tickets and hotel prices are at their cheapest.
