The Catacombs, Salzburg Overview

Carved into the Mönchsberg mountainside, the catacombs at St. Peter’s date back to the 12th century, making them the oldest in Austria. The mystical relics, murals, altars, and crypts uncovered here trace their origins back to antiquity and attract history enthusiasts worldwide.

The catacombs are home to sacred burial grounds and Christian hermit caves dotted with ancient engravings. The Getraduen and Maximus Chapels inside the catacombs radiate the demeanour of miniature altars carved into rocks and offer a mesmerising view overlooking St. Peter’s handsome cemetery.
