Franciscan Church, Salzburg, Salzburg Overview

Franciscan Church is one of the oldest churches in Salzburg. Other attractions in the church include the Hand of Refuge at the entrance, the big church bell called Marienglocke, the ‘Madonna with a Child’ painting detail on the high altar, and the Josephskapelle.

It was built in the 8th century, with the first church on the site being erected by St. Virgil. Constructed between 1468 and 1498, the tower of the church forms an important part of the city’s skyline. The original nave of the basilica and the Late Gothic chancel with adjoining vaulting are two features that combine the Romanesque and modern architectural elements in the church. Four out of the nine chapels at the Franciscan Church are blessed by different Archbishops.
