The Hellbrunn palace was built as the day residence of the Archbishop of Salzburg in the 1600s.The trick fountains were initiated by the Archibishop who had quite a sense of humour, he wanted to surprise his visitors and guests by suddenly activating these hidden fountains. Water flowing down from the Hellbrunn Mountain was used to build an intricate system of water fountains, automats and grottos. These fountains became the prominent design feature of the Hellbrunn Palace grounds as the captivating designs, and hidden water jets stunned all visitors. Built by Lorenz Rosenegger in 1750, a Baroque-style water-driven mechanical theatre with 163 tiny figurines is one of the main attractions at Wasserspiele Hellbrunn. Visitors also like to roam around the Palace Grounds and explore the Folklore Museum.
